A bag load of sense
Heavy backpacks can put stress on the neck and shoulder muscles but the
type of bag you buy can really make a difference.
- Choose a sturdy backpack from an outdoor activity shop rather than
a fashion bag. These bags are designed for people carrying heavy weights
over long distances and will protect you child's posture
- Bags with wide, padded straps and a waist belt will help redistribute
weight from the shoulders and back to the pelvis
- Children should wear the bag over both shoulders - they might think
this is 'uncool' but it will spread the weight evenly, avoiding pressure
on the spine
- Show your child how to pack wisely. Heavy objects should be packed
first and on the side so that they are close to the spine and the pelvis.
This will prevent the back from arching.
