schools look for respect

Leading experts in education will come together this month to discuss whether building respect in schools can help improve behaviour and tackle truancy.

‘Fostering a Culture of “Respect” in Schools: Key strategies for reducing truancy and managing behaviour’ is the title of a conference tackling the subject on Tuesday 28 February 2006.

Restoring respect in schools and communities was identified as a key priority for the Labour Government last year and the conference will pay particular attention to how schools can successfully use this to reduce incidents of truancy, bullying and violent conduct.

Speakers include head teacher Mark Davis, a member of the Government’s Practitioners Group on Behaviour and Discipline, and David Butler, Chief Executive of the National Confederation of Parent Teacher Associations.

As well as visiting the Government’s strategy for bringing back respect into schools, speakers will also discuss new legal proposals to restrain pupils, the role of parents, teachers and the community in building respect and how schools can adopt a whole school approach and responsibility towards managing behaviour.

The conference takes place in Central London.
